On the 22nd May 2009 Carlow held its Volunteer Award Ceremony
in McGrath Hall, (1945,) Bagenalstown.

This was jointly hosted by Carlow Community and Voluntary Forum, Carlow County Council, Volunteer Centre, Carlow and County Carlow Sports Partnership.

Ballon was well represented by Michael Martin of BIG and Seamus Cummins of Burrin Celtic....

.....seen here with Olivia O'Leary, broadcaster and journalist.

The various speakers extolled the merits of the volunteering section of all communities and the value they gave. Research showed that their work had a tangible commercial impact on the economy and there was a real need to recognise the value of their contribution.
Ballon and Rathoe have 34 active volunteer groups listed on the village web site, catering for all age groups from babies to senior citizens, and judging by the attendance of this ceremony join in with so many groups in the county supporting their communities.

A special thanks to the local scout group for their stewardship and guard of honour.

On the night Ballon was represented by:

Margaret Nolan, Jason Whelan, Máire George, Bernie Mullins
Elizabeth Martin, Michael Martin, Jenny Cummins, Seamus Cummins
