On Saturday 21st May, 2011 thirty children from Ballon National School celebrated their First Holy Communion.
There was a great deal of excitement and anticipation in the village as all the mums and dads, aunties and uncles, grandparents and friends gathered in the church to take part in the occasion.
A lot of preparation is necessary for this spiritual landmark in a child’s development and Fr. Howard thanked all who took part.
Of particular note was teacher Ann McMahon who led the children in their spiritual journey and who trained and conducted the choir. She was supported in the latter by Rose and Sean Whelan on the keyboard and guitar.
Sacristan Kathleen Condron had the church well presented, ship shape and Bristol fashion.
The children and parents who gave the readings and prayers did so with a pronunciation that might attract attention from the BBC.
And when all was over some parent volunteers from last year’s communion put on a spread in the Community Hall which was filled to capacity.
