The
Irish Sri Lanka Trust was founded in December 2004 in response to the
Tsunami by Chandie Monerawela. Chandie is a Sri Lankan who has lived
in Ireland for most of his life. His business is based in Navan and
it absorbs all of the administrative costs so that all money collected
goes directly to the fund projects.
The main industry in Sri Lanka is fishing and their entire fleet was
wiped out by the Tsunami. So far over 600 boats have been funded and
the cost per boat is €3000 in Sri Lanka compared to 14,000 in Ireland.
So this too is helping the boat building industry.
The money was raised by the children and their parents from various
fund raising activities for KHA.
The name of the boat will be 'An Bád Balláin'
and was selected from a competition which was won by Lisa Nolan. When
the boat is built the school will receive a photograph.

All Star player Damien Fitzhenry helped to launch the Christmas fundraising campaign at Ballon Football Club House.
Damien drew an analogy between the team spirit needed to win a Leinster Championship and that needed to raise money for the clinic in Kenya. Individuals can't make it alone and it has to be the talents and will of the group to achieve the results. Damien congratulated the Association for their considerable progress to date and wished them success for the future.

On a freezing cold
day the students made a collection at the Tullow Mart where
they raised €148.57

CHRIS DORAN LAUNCHES FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN:
‘You’re A Star’ contestant and favourite, Chris Doran,
paid a visit to Ballon National School on Friday, February 13, to launch
a fund-raising campaign organised by the children to help build a clinic
in Kenya. Although the children were excited by the TV star’s
visit they didn't’t let it overshadow the real business on hand
which is to help raise in the region of €17,000 towards the cost
of providing the clinic in Muluto in the African country.
Back in September of last year we brought you the story of Ballon National
School’s success in the Irish Independent’s ‘Building
for the Future Project’ when they won the County Carlow section
and a cash prize of €2,500 for the second successive year. The
schools project was based on the setting up of a fund-raising committee
to support a mission in Kenya. Under the banner of KHA (Kenya’s
Helpers Association) the children, supported by their parents, raised
in excess of €2,000 through various events and supplemented this
with a €1,000 donation from their prize fund.
This money was sent to the missions and in particular to The Servants
of the Mother of God where Sr. Madeline Ryan, a native of St. Mullins,
is in charge. Since then Sr. Madeline and the children have corresponded
regularly and only recently, when on a holiday in her native South Carlow,
she dropped in and presented the children with presents including a
map of Africa made from banana leaves. She was back at the school again
on Friday morning for the fundraising launch.
The clinic in Kenya will cost €30,000 to build but with donations
the Sisters have raised €13,000 to date. Now the young pupils are
determined to put a big dent in the remaining €17,000 needed by
organising such events as a disco, a ‘Clean-Easy’ party,
a sponsored fast, a sponsored silence, a barbecue and much more. They
are also placing collection boxes at their parent’s place of work
and in other schools. The teachers are even giving a helping hand by
organising an American Tea Party in Ballykealey Manor Hotel on March
16th
And so its all systems go after Friday’s launch and your support
for any of the fundraisers planned between now and the summer holidays
would indeed be appreciated.
