The bright sunshine brought out the crowds to the Ballon GFC annual field day last Sunday in Morris Park. A packed itinerary of over 25 different attractions ensured that there was lots to do with something for everyone both young and not so young. Ex Roisin Dubh man John Kelly provided a very entertaining hour of live music while the strawberries and ice cream, Tom Murphy’s chips and Michael McAsseys burgers all went down a treat. The club would like to thank everyone who helped out in any way to making it one of the most successful day’s ever. See you all again next year PG

FUN AND FROLLICKS AT MUCKFEST
After the absence of the St Patrick’s Day parade it was up to the Ballon GFC Leprachaun Muckfest to provide the local entertainment on the national holiday. And boy did it succeed! A large crowd of boys, girls and adults of all shapes and sizes made the best of what was a surprising good morning weather-wise. Fourteen obstacles on the course ensured that everyone who took part had to jump, crawl, balance, make their way through two mazes, through the ice baths. negotiate the sandpit, through two sets of tyres, climb and through the waterslide, ensuring that they ended up comprehensively disgustingly dirty, tired and soaking wet. And how everyone actually loved it! Nevertheless, the refreshments afterwards went down a treat particularly the hot chocolate and marshmallows among the younger set. The club wishes to thank all those who took part and those who helped out in any way to make the event such a success. A mountain of pictures is on the club’s Facebook page curtesy of PRO Walt Hollick and on the village website thanks to Michael Martin whose new puppy Buddy looked as if he wanted to have a go himself. Roll on next year.

AGM
A very well attended AGM of the Ballon gaelic football club tool place in the clubhouse on Friday the 18th at 8pm.
A lively meeting took place with a disappointing 2018 reviewed where the club was relegated back to the junior ranks for the coming year. However we hope for an improved showing for 2019 and the new team management headed up by Rathvilly man Paddy Molloy was wished the best of luck for the year ahead.
With Linda’s promotion to county PRO and Billy wanting to concentrate on refereeing there was some changes of officers.
The new chairman will be the hugely experienced John Kelly. Teresa Maher will take over as the new secretary while Emma Byrne takes over the finances as treasurer and Walt Hollick takes on the PRO role. All were wished best of luck in their new positions.
Of course the big change for 2019 will be the changes to the juvenile registration system. We will be organising registration nights each of the Fridays in February from 8-9pm in the clubhouse and we look forward to welcoming all the youth and their parents of the area on the night.
Negotiations continue between all the adult clubs of the area to enter joint independent teams at u17, u15, u13, u11, u9 and u7. Best of luck to all!
